Holidaymakers returning to Sydney after the Easter long weekend have faced major delays due to heavy traffic.

The NSW Transport Management Centre had issued two traffic warnings for the M1 Pacific Motorway heading south from Newcastle and the Central Coast.

Motorists were told to allow up to 40 minutes extra travel time from Somersby to Brooklyn, and from Berowra to Wahroonga.

In the Blue Mountains, major delays were expected to add at least an extra 90 minutes to tavel times.

As at 7.30pm, there were still significant delays on the Great Western Highway from Hartley to Blackheath.

South of Sydney, northbound traffic on the Hume Motorway was heavy from Mittagong to Campbelltown, likewise for the Princes Highway between Waterfall and Heathcote.

Adding to the traffic woes, a car crash at Edmondson Park in south-west Sydney closed one of the two eastbound lanes of Camden Valley Way.

An earlier multiple vehicle crash at Belrose, which had closed a westbound lane of Mona Vale Road at Forest Way, had been cleared by 5pm.
