A personal trainer who was once an ‘overweight full-time gamer’ has revealed how he shed a staggering 60kg in just 13 months.

Tom Kulik, 30, from Geelong in Victoria, tipped the scales at 143kg and would regularly binge on party pies and energy drinks. He spent years swimming at the beach with his shirt on to hide his XXL physique.

Determined to get on top of his health, Tom overhauled his lifestyle and dropped 12 pants sizes, sculpted his abs and became a professional personal trainer.

Before his remarkable body transformation, Tom had struggled with his weight his whole life.

He began channelling his energy into gaming as a way to avoid going out – and he would sit around for hours on end playing World of Warcraft [WOW].

‘I turned to gaming because I didn’t like to be seen. I was playing WOW up to 24 hours a day, and I had little interest in sports or recreational activities,’ Tom told Daily Mail Australia.

‘I was eating a lot of junk food. I ate a lot of sausage rolls and party pies and throughout the day I’d be eating Thai food, pizzas, chips, chocolate bars, and energy drinks – anything that was convenient.’

Tom said he would never take his top off at the beach and was ashamed of anyone seeing how he looked, even his family.

“Swimming with a shirt on was all I knew, and the thought of being seen shirtless in public terrified me.”

‘Swimming with a shirt on was all I knew, and the thought of being seen shirtless in public terrified me,’ he said.

‘I refused to have photos of me taken because I didn’t want to face the reality of my poor health.’

Over the years he attempted to shed the kilos with weight loss programs and diets but nothing seemed to work.

His turning point came in 2010 when he decided to set himself a New Year’s resolution to lose weight for good and he hasn’t looked back since.

‘I remember standing in the mirror, looking at my reflection and thinking how sick I was of what I was seeing, I was just fed up and thought enough was enough,’ he said.

Tom’s top tips to lose weight and eat healthy

Make a life commitment: Tell yourself you’re making a life decision to lose weight rather than make a temporary change or thinking of it as short term. This often leads to people failing to stick it out long enough to see the results they are after

Start small, take baby steps: Start by simply reducing your sugar intake. Cut out full sugar drinks and switch to a low sugar or diet option to start with, then once you’ve adapted to this new habit, move on to water.

Cheat days leads to overeating: A cheat meal as a reward is fine, but that’s not an invitation to go eat an entire large pizza, half a cheesecake with a chocolate thick shake to wash it all down

Make good choices: You can treat yourself to the foods you love, within reason. But don’t lie to yourself while stuffing your face with burgers and ice cream trying to convince yourself it’s ok

Avoid overeating at dinnertime: If you’re planning to go out to dinner and know you’ll likely eat far too much, then make an effort to eat fewer calories during the day leading up to the dinner

Tom started by tweaking his diet, culling his portion size and dishing up healthier meals and began doing short walks and light bodyweight workouts at home.

Within 13 months, he dropped 12 pants sizes and 60 kilos.

‘I never thought I’d go from a full time gamer and foodaholic to someone with a love for health and fitness,’ he said, describing his new body as a ‘dream’.

Tom said he was sometimes moved to tears when he looked in the mirror and saw his new toned  physique.

‘My transformation changed my life in more ways than I thought possible,’ he said.

Tom initially dropped to just 73kg with ‘no muscles’ but over the years, he worked his way up to 97kg, achieving rippling abs, toned legs and muscular arms.

‘I feel incredible, I couldn’t be happier,’ he said.

‘I never imagined that one day I would be one of those fit guys with abs at the beach. I never thought I’d look and feel the way that I do now.’

After his dramatic weight loss, Tom started a career working as a full-time personal trainer in the hope of helping other young people get on top of their own weight.

‘I’ve made it my mission to help anyone who is serious about changing their life by sharing what I’ve learnt first hand, and being there every step of the journey to the body of your dreams,’ he said.

‘I’m hoping that my story can help inspire or motivate some of you out there to achieve your fitness goals. It’s amazing what can happen in 12 months.

‘All it takes is making a life decision, sticking to it and the biggest thing is commitment, to not give up on yourself.’
