Hidden behind the walls of a century-old castle hides a luxurious modern hideaway fit for a king and queen.

Built in 1903, the French provincial ‘The Tower’ at Mount Ophir Estate in Rutherglen in rural Victoria was once Australia’s largest winery complex.

The luxury escape features a bedroom for two, a spiral staircase that leads guests up to a secret library and a marble bathroom.

Owner Eliza Brown transformed The Tower Castle, which occupies one corner of the 118-year-old winery, into a holiday home after her family purchased the ‘amazing gem’ in 2016.

The vintage winery has since been converted into a holiday home featuring a beautiful spiral staircase that takes guests up to a secret library

‘My siblings and I set to work restoring the 140-acre estate, including the Tower, to its former glory,’ Ms Brown, the CEO of Mount Ophir Estate, said.

‘We wanted a mix of modern and old school styling. Comfort was undoubtedly the priority; we wanted people to walk in and feel at home.

‘This meant an oversized comforting couch, a beautiful bed and a luxurious bathroom with property views, plus lots of small touches like our typewriter, which always has a personalised welcome note.’

Couples can treat themselves to a romantic night or two at the castle, which is listed as a unique accommodation option on Airbnb from $633 per night.

‘We saw the huge opportunity to put our region Rutherglen on the map using Airbnb as a platform. Airbnb allowed us to share our unique and rare space and property on a platform that celebrated individualism,’ Ms Brown said.

‘We are now proud to offer premium accommodation, wines, and memorable winery experiences to our guests.’
