Hairstylist reveals the most common botched DIY job during lockdown

A celebrity hairstylist says he is ‘flat out’ fixing botched DIY home jobs for Sydneysiders after lockdown.

Jaye Edwards, founder of Australia’s leading salon chain Edwards and Co, said he is ‘fully booked’ correcting wonky fringes, home bleach jobs, and endless roots for hundreds who attempted to cut or colour their own hair over the past three months.

The hairdresser, who operates eight chains across NSW, VIC and Queensland, was forced to reschedule more than 2,000 appointments after Sydney was plunged into lockdown on June 25 and Melbourne followed six weeks later.

As his staff struggle to cope with soaring demand in the wake of Sydney’s reopening on October 11, Mr Edwards urges clients to spare a thought for their stylist before they hit the chair by making one very important phone call.

‘Our team is completely flat out at the moment, so my top tip to ensure your appointment runs smoothly is to bring a reference photo and let your stylist know ahead of time if you need a major lockdown correction,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

He added: ‘It’s so satisfying for the entire team to get back behind the chair and bring a smile to our clients face.’

Hairdressers and beauticians threw open their doors to double-jabbed customers on Freedom Day, though they are still restricted to a maximum of five in the premises at one time.

Despite these limits, Mr Edwards said his team are thrilled to be back in business in the Harbour City and are excited to tend to the locks of holed up Melburnians after they are freed from the city’s sixth lockdown since the pandemic began.

And it looks like they won’t have long to wait.

Victorians can look forward to eased restrictions within days, despite the state recording 1,838 new coronavirus cases and seven more deaths on Sunday.

New infections are on the decline, down from 1,993 on Saturday, after cases soared above 2,200 this week.

Almost 39,000 Victorians rolled up their sleeves for a jab on Saturday as the state ramps up its vaccination program.

The Victorian government is set to fast-track freedoms in its roadmap out of lockdown for those fully-vaccinated once 70 per cent of the state’s eligible population aged over 16 have had both jabs.

That critical milestone in Victoria’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to be achieved this Thursday with restrictions to be eased from October 25.
