More jobs available and fewer applicants than ever in Melbourne

Melbourne has more jobs available and fewer applicants than ever before as businesses reopen after lockdown.

Victoria is in the middle of a hiring blitz, with available jobs in industries ranging from McDonalds to pubs, retail and office work.

Seek’s Stephen Tuffley said the current job climate was “absolutely a job-seekers market”.

Hospitality job ads have gone up 204 per cent in Melbourne in the past month.

“There’s a plethora of roles for whatever it is you’re looking for,” he said.

Data from Seek shows hospitality job ads surged by 204 per cent in the last month, while ads for jobs in sports and recreation went up by 58 per cent.

The data also shows:

• There are 48 per cent more ads for retail jobs available than a month ago
• 40 per cent more for real estate jobs
• 33 per cent more for manufacturing jobs
• 25 per cent more for sales
• 21 per cent more for advertising
• 20 per cent more for call centres

Macca’s alone is trying to fill 11,000 jobs across Australia at the moment, welcoming all ages and experience levels to apply.

However, Seek has said the data indicates just a fraction of what jobs are available as Victorian business open up.

The problem for businesses is there aren’t enough people applying for the jobs.

“There’s a lower number of applications per job than we’ve almost ever had,” Mr Tuffley said.

As a result, businesses are boosting perks like staff discounts, meal allowances, flexible hours and training as they compete for good workers.

“All of those things are being thought about by hirers to make themselves as attractive as possible to a smaller number of candidates that are looking for roles.”
