US says it ‘does not support’ Taiwan’s independence but hails ‘robust’ democracy

The United States on Saturday congratulated Taiwan’s president-elect Lai Ching-te, but maintained that Washington does not support independence for the self-ruled island claimed by Beijing. “The US holds no official relations with Taiwan but is its most important international backer,” says FRANCE 24 correspondent Fraser Jackson. “They have a lot at stake, both from a military and economic standpoint.”
