Japan’s Otokonoko cross-dressing culture challenges gender norms

Today’s Focus report takes us to Japan where we take a deep dive into the Otokonoko subculture. Born from the world of mangas in the early 2000s, Otokonokos are usually men who dress in feminine clothing for entertainment – much like drag culture. It’s not a completely new phenomenon however, as cross dressing in Japan dates back three centuries. Yuko Sano, Mélodie Sforza, Alexis Bregere and Yena Lee report on how Otokonokos are bending gender norms in a socially conservative society.
