Bank robber pulls off heist after his ‘ugly tie’ distracts witnesses

A bank robber has managed to pull off a heist in Germany after distracting witnesses with his ‘ugly tie’ that has prevented them from giving police a description of his face.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, robbed a bank in Bad Soden-Salmünster, a town near Frankfurt, while wearing an ‘ugly patterned tie in the style of the 1980s’ according to police.

The robber, who is said to have been armed with a gun, threatened a cashier on Tuesday and made off with an unknown amount of money according to local media reports. 

But the police are still struggling to find the thief – and it’s all down to the tie he was wearing. 

The item was so ugly that when questioned by police, witnesses could not remember what the man looked like – only that he was wearing a hideously patterned tie.

Police believe it was part of the robber’s plan to wear the ugly tie. ‘He did it cleverly,’ a police spokesman told Der Spiegel. 

‘Everyone focused on the ugly tie and didn’t pay attention to his face.’

Witnesses of the bank robbery were only able to tell police the suspect was in his early 20s and was carrying a handgun at the time.  

While this particular robber used an ugly tie to his advantage, a British bank raider nicknamed ‘Shrek’ was told he was too ugly for armed robbery in 2009. 

David Holyoak, from Manchester, was caught after his distinctive features – including his ‘big ears and rotund features’ – made it easy for police to spot him.

Meanwhile, other robbers have not been so fortunate to get away with their crime.   

Last year, a British man attempted to rob a bank but was caught after he wrote down his list of demands on a till receipt for vitamin tablets he had been given at a Holland and Barrett. 

The robber fled when the Santander staff triggered the alarms but left behind the incriminating note which showed he had been at the neighbouring health food shop.
