Dozens of diners scarpered without paying their bills at a five-star hotel and leaving the establishment with £5,000 in unpaid tabs.

The Dorchester hotel in Mayfair, central London, was forced to evacuate customers who had been dining at its rooftop restaurant The Grill at 10.30pm last Friday.

But by the time the emergency services had given the all-clear, most of the restaurant’s 50 diners had left without paying.

The Dorchester’s management said the lost money would have to be written off, according to The Sun

Food at the iconic Mayfair restaurant, led by head chef Tom Booton, includes a £7 portion of chips and a five-course menu for £85 that includes confit pigeon.

A source told The Sun: ‘The whole thing was a complete carry on.

‘The fire brigade were called when a gas heater burst into flames but whoever rang told them a person was on fire so they sent ambulances and the fire brigade.

‘Once it was clear they realised that guests had left without paying any of their bills, it came to around £5,000 in all.’

The fire brigade said that the fire had been extinguished by the time emergency services had arrived and no one was hurt.
