Boy and woman are arrested on suspicion of assault after baby died

A 16-year-old boy and 21-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of assault after a baby died in hospital three days after suffering a cardiac arrest at a house.

Emergency services were called to reports of a baby being hurt at a property on Acorn Drive in Belper, Derbyshire, on Sunday.

East Midlands Ambulance Service found the baby in cardiac arrest and contacted Derbyshire Constabulary just before 10.50pm.

Police said the child was taken to hospital but sadly died on Wednesday afternoon.

The two people arrested have since been released on police bail pending further investigations. A crime scene remains in place.

Detectives have been in the area for several days carrying out investigations and speaking to people about the circumstances which led to the death.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘We received a call just before 10.50pm on Sunday to reports that East Midlands Ambulance Service were in attendance at an address in Acorn Drive, Belper, where a young baby was in cardiac arrest.

‘The child was taken to hospital, but tragically died on Wednesday afternoon.

‘Detectives have been in the area for several days carrying out enquiries into the circumstances which led to the death, and a scene remains in place.

‘A 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident and have been released on police bail pending further investigations.’
