Australia vs England – Ashes: Live score from Day One of the 5th Test
England’s misery Down Under has almost ended, but Joe Root and his men have one last shot at salvaging some pride against Australia.
The tourists narrowly avoided the whitewash last time out as they held out for a draw in Sydney to ensure no 5-0 scoreline could be recorded.
Now they head to Tasmania for the the fifth and final Test, and a chance to add some respect to the series by ending their wait for a victory.

Root speaking at the toss
04:11, Kishan Vaghela
‘With overhead conditions, slightly tacky nature to the surface, it’s a nice opportunity to bowl first.
‘We’ve got five days of hard cricket to give a really good account of ourselves. We have to take that opportunity.
‘It was very important that we got something from Sydney. The way we went about it on the last day was brilliant.’
Desperate times call for… well you know the rest

England’s five changes in this Test compares to Australia six in the entire series
— Nick Hoult (@NHoultCricket)
England make 5 changes for this Test. It is the 9th time in their last 17 Tests, and 11th in 23, that they’ve made 4 or more changes, having done so 10 times in the previous 235, from Dec 2001 to Jan 2020.

ENGLAND WIN THE TOSS AND WILL BOWL
04:01,
Joe Root calls correctly and Khawaja and Warner will be out to bat on day one. We are set for the latest instalment of Broad v Warner.
So, what we are expecting: Burns, Pope, Billings, Woakes and Robinson in. Hameed, Bairstow, Buttler, Anderson and Leach out
Better news
03:52,
So after the sheet went on to cover the pitch, it appears the covers are back on again. Former England bowler Steve Finn has compared it to ‘musical chairs’.
LAWRENCE BOOTH IN HOBART
03:47,
Rain has delayed the start here, but the toss will take place at 3pm local time (4am in the UK) – which is half an hour late. Judging by the England bowlers who marked out their run-up, it will be a four-man seam attack of Broad, Robinson, Woakes and Wood.
… but he’s happy to chat to Hameed!
03:44,
A sign of great leadership it seems.
Great to see James Anderson spend some time, having a chat with his former Lancashire teammate Haseeb Hameed. Hasn’t been a happy tour for the young opener #Ashes pic.twitter.com/UWMS7ULYic

Team news
03:43,
As expected, Anderson set to miss out…
Broad, Woakes, Robinson and Wood have all measured their run-ups. That’ll be the attack.

Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan sending his support to Billings ahead of his Test debut. Not a bad player to congratulate you…
So happy for you mate Congratulations on your test debut wish you all the very best go well @sambillings 👍👍🙌🏻

News from the middle
03:40,
SEN in Australia now reporting the toss will take place at 4am GMT with the covers now off, providing there are no more delays.
If no further rain, the coin toss will be at 3pm AEDT#Ashes

Some big names in here…
03:36,
England’s player milestones in men’s Tests:
Cap #100: Sammy Woods

The experts have spoken…
03:26,
Not looking great here at the Bellerive Oval. Acquired local knowledge says it’s a very bad sign when the rain comes from the east, which is to the right of this picture, in Hobart, like it is now #Ashes pic.twitter.com/6FdBvEJaNV

Toss delayed
03:23,
Cricket Australia confirm rain has delayed the toss. No timeframe given. Not the greatest start but in keeping with what was expected weather-wise.
Allan Donald interview
03:17,
So with the covers on and rain set to delay things as it stands, why not get into the mood with this Allan Donald interview and what he thinks about the finest bowling partnership England have produced…
LAWRENCE BOOTH IN HOBART
03:13,
A couple of England cap presentations going on out in the middle (where, incidentally, it’s raining: the covers are on). Jimmy Anderson hands Sam Billings his first cap, and Ben Stokes does the honours for his Durham team-mate Mark Wood’s 25th.
LAWRENCE BOOTH IN HOBART
03:06,
‘Speculation is mounting here that Ollie Pope will replace Jonny Bairstow, after Pope was seen having a net session earlier.
It may be that Bairstow’s right thumb hasn’t recovered sufficiently from the blow it took during his first-innings century at Sydney, potentially handing Pope the chance to make an impression after playing only the first two Tests of the series.’
Ollie Pope netting an hour before the toss… not sure where that places him but unlikely he’s batting now if not in the XI. #Ashes pic.twitter.com/wxalYXJcjy

Australia team news
03:06,
The hosts have confirmed Sydney twin-centurion Usman Khawaja retains his place in the XI in Hobart and will open alongside David Warner, with Marcus Harris dropping out.
Travis Head meanwhile comes back in after recovering from Covid. England’s news will come at the toss. Now we all know you want to see a picture of a young Khawaja and Warner…
Australia’s opening pair for the fifth #Ashes Test go back a long, long way 🥰
