How the ‘TikTok general’ became frontrunner in Indonesian election

Vote counting is under way in Indonesia’s presidential election, with Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto taking a strong lead in an early, unofficial tally. Subianto has targeted the youth vote, particularly by making use of social media, earning himself the nickname the “TikTok general”. But the former military strongman’s reinvention hides a much darker past. The son-in-law of the former dictator Suharto, Subianto is accused of kidnapping, torturing and executing opponents.
